… Dorothy Parker, aka Dottie, aka our new house!
Since we moved in, we’ve made note of all the work we need to do, and believe me, there’s lots of work to be done. Despite this, Mr. Mad Cow affectionately called the place a grande dame of a house. I think a grande dame deserves a name so I started mulling over period appropriate possibilities when Dorothy Parker came to mind.
So why Dorothy Parker? 1) We don’t know any Dorothy’s. 2) I just finished reading “West of Sunset”, a novel about F.Scott Fitzgerald’s years in Hollywood. Dorothy Parker makes an appearance in the book, and that started my mind rolling. I admit that I have yet to read any of her work, but her bio makes her sound like quite the pistol. Also, her date of birth is pretty close to when our Dorothy was built, giving me more reason to go with the name.
Dottie is a 3200 square foot two-family. There’s an apartment on the ground floor, while the owners’ unit occupies the second and third floors. She needs a lot of TLC, but she has good bones and lots of character. So it’s just a matter of time, money, and sweat before we get her all spiffy again. I have to admit that I am both excited and daunted by Dottie’s needs. It’s a bit like parenthood, but more expensive.
PS- I apologize for the less than stellar photos. It’s quite challenging to fit such a large building in one frame. Also, it’s been gray for days.
