Last night, the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers to win the World Series*. Shortly thereafter, the rioting started in the Mission. What is it with major sporting events and rioting? How does a victory create a drunken mob bent on fire and destruction?
The following pictures (courtesy of SF Gate) were taken at 19th & Mission and 24th & Mission — both locations within walking distance of my apartment.

Again, why must a major sporting victory be accompanied by fire and destruction?
* For my international readers, the World Series is the final round in the Major League Baseball championship. Despite its global moniker, only the US and Canada are represented amongst the team. Why the series is referred to as a “world” event is beyond me.
