I’ve gushed about Philz Coffee and Blue Bottle Coffee. I believe it’s time I devote a post to Bernie’s, my local coffee shop.

Bernie’s is named for the owner, Bernadette Melvin, who grew up in Noe Valley. She opened the premises in 2007, and the place has been teaming with locals ever since. The place has a very Cheers-where-everybody-knows-your-name feel for those who have been in the neighborhood much longer than yours truly. Yet I can’t complain. I’ve been served by Bernie herself, and she is just as amiable to newbies as she is to old-school repeat customers.
The brew and beans at Bernie’s come from LaCoppa Coffee, a local Bay Area roaster who ships beans within 48 hours of roasting to ensure freshness and flavor. There’s free wifi for my nerdy husband and a children’s corner with books and a chalkboard — on the day of Maurice Sendak’s death someone made a gorgeous Max and Wild Things chalk drawing.
Sadly, Bernie’s is website-free. Here is the address: 3966 24th Street, SF. Opening hours are 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM daily. Perhaps you will run into me and the Vachette there some day.
